Third down, with 12 seconds left in the clock, Gaithersburg's junior quarterback Robert Graham rolled left in the direction of two Trojans receivers before throwing to his right to running back Semaj Richardson.
Richardson raced to the endzone and the eventual dagger to what had been a game controlled by Sherwood for the entire game.
Gaithersburg went on to win 24-17 and the school's third State Championship crown. The Trojans finished the season 13-0. Meanwhile, Sherwood finished 11-2, the two defeats coming from Gaithersburg.
