2018 MOCOFB ELITE-SIX - WEEK EIGHT

RK TEAM PTS VOTES

1

DAMASCUS (10 1st place votes)

7-0. LW: #1, (with 11 1st place votes)

JHB: Survived a tough game at a motivated Watkins Mill. Finding ways to win as they did, this is what separates Damascus from the rest of the county. I expect them to tighten things up as not your average Walter Johnson heads to town.

Coach Owens: Even good teams (especially high school kids) can have a bad half. Might be bad news for WJ this week.

Matt Cohen: 49 wins in a row. This one wasn't as pretty, as a strong Watkins Mill team put up a good fight, but the more talented Damascus team prevailed. Damascus remains the only undefeated public school team in Montgomery County.

2

QUINCE ORCHARD (7 1st place vote)

6-1. LW: #2, (with 6 1st place vote)

JHB: Soundly defeated and battered Einstein over last weekend. The Cougars have one more Warm Up game this week against Wheaton before heading to the Blackhole in Week 9.

Coach Owens: Handles their business like a champ should. Looking forward to the playoffs.

Matt Cohen: The Cougars got an extra day of rest this week playing a Saturday game against Einstein after its big win over Paint Branch last week. QO dominated, as expected, slamming Einstein 48-0. QO has a virtual bye week this week as they face Wheaton.

3

NORTHWEST

6-1. LW: #3

JHB: The Jaguars escaped Richard Montgomery High School with the Victory last week. A closer game than many expected, but the Rockets have definitely improved as the season as gone on. The Jaguars get Whitman this week and must stay focused on the task at hand especially when they know what's looming for them in Week 9.

Coach Owens: Always has a tough time vs RM, I'm sure they were happy to get the W.

Matt Cohen: Northwest had a very tough test from a red hot RM team in Week 7. I certainly did not think with was going to be a defensive struggle, but it turned out that Northwest would in a 18-13 game. Northwest has gotten through two very tough games unscathed.

4

PAINT BRANCH

6-1. LW: #4

JHB: Got back into 40 point form last week against Gaithersburg. A rising Sherwood team is heading to town this week and will be looking to make a statement in the 4A North. Which team will keep their Playoff chances alive this week? Definitely expect this to be the game of the week.

Coach Owens: Making the switch here due to the differences on their win over RM.

Matt Cohen: Paint Branch bounced back from the big loss to QO by blowing out Gaithersburg. It wasn't as dominant of a defensive performance as I thought it would be, but the offense did put up 48.

5

WINSTON CHURCHILL

6-1. LW: #6

JHB: Made the statement of who was the real Number 5 team in the County. This team dominated Blake last week and unfortunately for Seneca Valley, I predict worse for them this week.

Coach Owens: This is a team that Northwest will want to avoid in the playoffs. They are getting better every week.

Matt Cohen: The biggest win of the week goes to Churchill, which went on the road to Blake and came away with a 19 point win. Michael Janis was a star, again, in Churchill's win, as the Bulldogs offense continues to roll. That was the signature win Churchill has needed.

6

JAMES H. BLAKE

5-2. LW: #5

Matt Cohen: Blake dropped its second game of the season as it fell to Churchill at home, but I just can't drop the Bengals out of the Elite Six. There is just so much talent on this team, and the Bengals do not have a truly bad loss. I expect them to bounce back in a big way this week against Rockville. I still think Blake is a playoff team.

Received Votes: Richard Montgomery (4 votes, 4 pts), Watkins Mill (3 votes, 3 pts), Sherwood (1 vote, 1 pt)

Coach Owens on Watkins Mill: Had my doubts, but you keep Damascus scoreless in the first half, you are doing something right. Keep it up Rines!

JHB on Sherwood: "It was hard selecting the 6th spot this week, but Sherwood edged out the others because they have momentum on their side and only blown out in one of their two losses. Blake still is a contender and Watkins Mill opened everyone's eyes this week. Week 10 is going to be interesting between those two teams. Sherwood has the chance to really make their Elite 6 claim by winning this week at Paint Branch."

Panel: M. Cornejo, D. Anderson, M. Miller, K. Grant, T. Changuris, J. Hamilton-Brown, K. Bratt-Pfotenhauer, K. McFadden, T. Peters, C. Grier, M. Cohen, M. Ellis, B. Palmer, M. Marty, M. Dewhurst, L. Oliver, N. Owens.
