SLUGGISH PANTHERS ESCAPE COLONELS

by Michael Cornejo

If fans had missed week one games; week two did not look that different from it. The torrential downpour of rain that swept through the D.C. Area in the past few days had taken its toll on the vigor of players in tonight's game at Blazers Stadium between #2 Paint Branch Panthers and the Magruder Colonels. Both teams looked like they were playing in the second scrimmage of the year with overthrown balls, costly fumbles, and errant kicks in special teams. But in the end, Paint Branch found a way to get it to their best player in Bene't Willis to score all of the Panthers touchdowns en route to a Paint Branch 19-0 win.

Unranked Magruder looked undersized and incompetent upfront compared to Paint Branch's behemoth offensive line but they made it up with a lot of guts. The Colonels defensive line got to Panthers quarterback David Smith and rattled the big guy continuously. Smith's first attempt was hurried with an attack to his left causing him to throw a rainbow of an interception toward the center of the field.

Unfortunately for Magruder, their offense could not capitalize on their defensive team's efforts. Paint Branch's defense shined best busting through and outmaneuvering the offensive line; lassoing Chris Miller, Garland Owens, and Tyrii Jackson behind the backfield.

It was 7-0 at the half with Paint Branch's lone score being Willis' touchdown ten minutes into the first quarter. The Panthers may have reached the redzone twice with one being fumbled inside the 15. Magruder's offense couldn't find a rhythm and found themselves pinned in their own territory for most of the first half.

The second half began with Paint Branch's continued pressure on Magruder's offense. The Colonels looked to have not found an answer and got themselves in 4th and long punting situations on occasion. Though when it looked like they were driving, miscues such as mis-pitches and low snaps would plague them. As hard as the Colonels defense fought, they were soon overwhelmed and tired. Bene't Willis would find his way to the house with a 31-yard run giving Paint Branch a two-possession lead.

Magruder needed a score but they continued to go backwards. Low snaps, a delay of game penalty, and hurried plays left and right. The Colonels' offensive line was breaking down.

Willis got to work quick. He lays the final nail with a 69-yard scamper no more than three minutes of his last touchdown. With five minutes left and down 19-0, all Magruder wanted was avoid a shutout.

The Colonels are who we thought they were. Determined and tough as Muncaster Mill Road boys had usually been. They held their own against what is supposed to be the second best team in the county. Paint Branch is a good team with a lot of playmakers though they seemed to have played down to their potential. One might expect for them to be connecting passes and scoring at will but that did not happen tonight.

Top Player: Bene't Willis 13 carries for 195 yards, three touchdowns.
