#1 QUINCE ORCHARD (10-0), 4A-W88 pts. 11 1st place votes

--> 10-0 can't be argued. Should be able to roll through their first round opponent. -Matt Miller, MOCOFb Analyst "millerlite8389"

--> The Cougars finish the regular season unbeaten for the third time in five years. Does this team have enough to go 14-0 and bring home the school's third title and second in the Dave Mencarini era? As Mencarini told me after the Magruder game, "now the fun begins." -Matt Papuchis, Patch Sports

--> Another shutout for the Cougars shows me this defense is playing state-championship level football as we head to playoffs. -Sebastian Salazar, CSNWashington

--> Cougars enter the playoffs as probably the best team in the state. -Matt Dewhurst, CSNWashington

#2 SENECA VALLEY (9-1), 3A77 points.

--> The Screamin' Eagles will need to get to 13 wins to earn the school's 13th state title. Coincidence? Maybe. But this might be Kim's best opportunity since taking over in 2004. I definitely like them in round 1. From there, anything can happen. -Matt Papuchis, Patch Sports

#3 PAINT BRANCH (9-1), 4A-E65 points.

--> Great season for Coach Nesmith's bunch. The Panthers cannot overlook any of the Baltimore area teams. -Matt Miller, MOCOFb Analyst "millerlite8389"

--> Even as the No. 3 seed in their region, Paint Branch has a good shot to escape the first two rounds. They should come out on top of the 4A North and represent MoCo very nicely. -Matt Papuchis, Patch Sports

--> Paint Branch got past the feisty Vikings but the Baltimore teams they will see in the post season are no joke. Can't take them lightly. -Matt Dewhurst, CSNWashington

#4 CHURCHILL (9-1), 4A-S56 points.

--> Coach Allen could be coach of the year as the Bulldogs finished 9-1. Tough first round matchup versus talented Gaithersburg team. -Matt Miller, MOCOFb Analyst "millerlite8389"

--> When the Bulldogs beat then-undefeated Gaithersburg by two points in Week 5, it set off a string of five straight losses for the Trojans. Meanwhile, Churchill's 9-1 finish resembled the Fred Shepherd days. These two teams square off again this week and I like the Bulldogs to once again come out on top, potentially setting up an intriguing match-up against QO. -Matt Papuchis, Patch Sports

--> Offense had some struggles in trying to pull away from Sherwood. Defense is playing great and Kamara is a closer if there ever was one. -Sebastian Salazar, CSNWashington

--> In Week 5, Churchill used Gaithersburg to rebound from its only loss of the season. Now the true test will come with the rematch in Week 1 of the postseason. -Matt Dewhurst, CSNWashington

--> No choking this year, the Bulldogs are back in the hunt. Will see if they can match the athleticism of Gaithersburg in round one. -Fred B. "BigFred"

#5 DAMASCUS (8-2), 3A43 points.

--> Record and playoff seeding was better than most predicted. Can the Hornets stop Linganore's power run game? -Matt Miller, MOCOFb Analyst "millerlite8389"

--> A tough test right out of the gate for the Hornets vs. Linganore. But a Damascus win would set up a potential rematch between the Hornets and the Screamin' Eagles for the 3A West crown. -Matt Papuchis, Patch Sports

--> Good bounceback for Swarmin' Hornets. Second seed makes for another postseason showdown with Linganore. -Sebastian Salazar, CSNWashington

--> Hornets locked up the 2 seed in the 3A West in Week 10. Looking forward to this cross-county rivalry game with Linganore Friday. -Matt Dewhurst, CSNWashington

#6 SHERWOOD (6-4), 4A-E26 points.

--> Missed the playoffs, but the Stormin' Warriors were much better than expected. -Matt Miller, MOCOFb Analyst "millerlite8389"

--> I really wanted to give my final Elite 8 spot of the 2011 season to Northwest. The Jaguars were one of six MoCo teams to finish 5-5 and of the bunch, they get my vote of the "best of the middle." But I give the final spot to Sherwood by a hair. They finished with a better record and also won the head-to-head with NW in one of the season's most thrilling games. And even though their 6-year playoff streak comes to a close, the Warriors faired pretty well for a team with their fourth coach since 2008. -Matt Papuchis, Patch Sports

--> Warriors surprised a lot of people this season and had one of the toughest defenses around. -Sebastian Salazar, CSNWashington

--> Very surprising season for the Warriors. I know they will be upset for missing the playoffs but with all the turnover in the last year Sherwood has nothing to hang its about. -Matt Dewhurst, CSNWashington

--> Always competitive, the Warriors kept it interesting during a season most expected the worse. A couple of made extra points and Sherwood would be playing this week. -Eric H. "Cover2"

#7 BLAKE (7-3), 4A-E15 points.

--> Best season in many years as Coach Nazarro led the Bengals to 7-3. Too bad they've moved into the 4A North region. -Matt Miller, MOCOFb Analyst "millerlite8389"

--> Blake right now is likely cursing whatever genius put them in the 4A North vs. the 4A West like most MoCo teams. A 7-win season for the Bengals gives them their best finish in school history since opening its doors in 1999. Hats off to them. -Matt Papuchis, Patch Sports

--> It's a shame that the Bengals go 7-3 and get knocked from the postseason for essentially strength of schedule. -Matt Dewhurst, CSNWashington

#8t BETHESDA-CHEVY CHASE (6-4), 4A-S12 points.

--> Even though BCC made the playoffs, I still think Blake and Sherwood are better teams. That's my reasoning for leaving the Barons out even though I ranked them at 8 last week.

--> Not many people are giving the Barons a shot against QO. And I really don't either. But still, congrats to BCC for earning its first playoff birth since 1995. -Matt Papuchis, Patch Sports

--> Won four straight to get into the playoffs and have a balanced offense. QO is a tough task. -Sebastian Salazar, CSNWashington

--> Will be a short stay but the Barons strong finish, a good job by Rich Noland and the grace of the football g-ds extends their season by a week. -Eric H. "Cover2"

#8t GAITHERSBURG (5-5), 4A-W12 points.

--> Injuries have plagued this Trojans team but they've stumbled into the playoffs. Can Simba and Billy Brown led the Trojans over powerful Churchill? -Matt Miller, MOCOFb Analyst "millerlite8389"

--> Got to throw the Barons in to the Elite Eight this week after making the playoffs for the first time since 1995 (before I was even in high school) and their first back-to-back winning seasons since 1967 (before my parents were in high school). --> They are going to the playoffs hopefully healthy. -Ron E. "moco555"

WHO RANKS THE ELITE 8?

The MOCOFOOTBALL.COM ranking team consists of ten individuals that include former MoCo Football team captains, former Washington Post All-Met, college football players, former coaches, former athletic director, Comcast sports analysts, a former booster club president, a decade experienced MoCo referee, and a county youth league commisioner. All members are approved in voting fashion by credibility and honesty. All are active members of our message board.

The deadline for submitting rankings is at Midnight, Sunday. There should be at least nine votes or the ranking does not get published. The list is publicly updated every Tuesday of the regular season.
