The 2011 season begins with a Week 1 showdown between Quince Orchard and Sherwood. The Cougars are MoCo's most consistently improving team and they face off against one of its formidable opponents in Sherwood. The Warriors have Coach Mike Bonavia running the show now and if the boys in blue and silver can pull this one off, all will be good in Sandy Spring, if not, it could get rough for 'em with Gaithersburg and Churchill in the first half of their season... The talk of the town is Paint Branch and they welcome the bullies of the 2A- the Rockville Rams- who moved up to 3A for the next two years... The Damascus Hornets travel down Route 27 to face off against Larry Hurd and the Coyotes of Clarksburg for a classic battle between two well-coached upper MoCo teams. Well-coached is an understatement when you have a man named Al Thomas on your sideline. The Coyotes counter with a man who knows Big Al well with Coach Bob Hampton providing a cerebral arsenal for the boys in Coyote blue.

Week 2 has Clarksburg facing 2010's surprise team of the year in Walter Johnson... B-CC gets bold by hosting one of the state's best teams in Frederick County's Linganore Lancers... The ever-tough Magruder Colonels play David Smith, Bene't Willis and Paint Branch... The Kennedy-Wootton game winner may determine the direction where their respective programs can go this early in the season; the outcome serves to be tremendously vital for both... Churchill vs Whitman and Einstein vs Wheaton are always a backyard-brawl type of game that happen to match equally... Speaking of backyard brawls, The King's Trophy travels to South Germantown with Seneca Valley to The Black Hole to face Northwest. The trophy hasn't been back to black and silver since 2006. Is Coach Mike Neubeiser- a Jags defensive coordinator from 1998-2003- the answer Jag Nation has been looking for?

Hard-nosed linebacker Bret Sickels, Karou Diakite, Nadim Elhage and them Churchill Bulldogs host Coach Joe Allen’s former team; the ever-improving B-CC Barons in Week 3... A rematch of last year’s 4A West Regional Finals pits Trojan King Simba Gwashavanhu and Gaithersburg vs Sherwood. We can be sure the Warriors are motivated in this game the way 2010 ended for them. Both teams are losing some big names in the quarterback position (Fetters/Gaithersburg and Pignone/Sherwood) so a crucial step to find a leader under center would be huge in a big game this early in the season... Quince Orchard faces off with pre-season favorite Paint Branch in what could be one of the best games of week 3. A true home game would have been nice but the Panthers proved to feel at home Blair Stadium.... Rockville vs Einstein, Springbrook vs WJ, and Wheaton vs Blair would make some exciting games.
Consider Week 4, the week of true grit. Magruder’s ever-tough team has been an annual .500 team and if there's a game you can't bet on it will be the Colonels' game against Gaithersburg. Both teams are going to be clawing / scratching / climbing to win this one out... Expect Churchill to play with a nothing-to-lose attitude vs Seneca Valley as the Bulldogs have done so in recent years. The Eagles are a consistent 30+ score monters to teams with records below .600 but Churchill somehow slips and gets their breaks every time they play SV (that's the curse of Coach Shepherd for ya)... Quince Orchard meets with their former standout defensive coordinator Mike Neubeiser when the Cougars travel to Northwest. Dave Mencarini will have to go against the DC that may know him better than anyone else in MoCo... Expect a back-and-forth affair between Whitman-Springbrook, WM-Clarksburg, WJ-Poolesville, RM-Wootton, and B-CC-Kennedy.
Seneca Valley travels to Quince Orchard in what can be Week 5’s toughest game. Seneca Valley is a consistent winner, but Quince Orchard has won at least 10 games a season in five of the last six years. The exciting finish of the playoff game last year between these two teams could make this an instant classic. Fred Kim vs Dave Mencarini has to be MoCo's version of Marty Schottenheimer vs Tony Dungy... Downtown consortium rivals Paint Branch and Springbrook battled for a playoff spot last year with the Blue Devils winning, 34-33 with RB Devon Pestano. Either teams have been consistently competing for the final playoff spots so expect this game to have some crucial implications later in the season... Sherwood vs Damascus, need we say more? Al Thomas welcomes back an all too familiar team. If Coach Mike Bonavia can finish the game on top and get the public asking "Al who?' beware MoCo, beware Maryland.
Gaithersburg will call Clarksburg home for Week 6 but with a third straight game at home, the Coyotes should be well adapted to their field’s terrain... Sherwood welcomes rival Magruder to start the second half of the regular season... Super Q.O. faces a defensive behemoth in Whitman... The Rockville Rams got their work cut out for them when they travel to Germantown to face Seneca Valley….. With lackluster 2010 seasons, the Churchill-Northwest game looks to be a close one on paper (and online)... Wheaton- MoCo’s team with the easiest schedule- Richard Montgomery. It will be up to the Rockets to show us how easy the Knights’ schedule really is... lots of underrated neck-and-neck games with Einstein vs Watkins Mill, Wootton vs Blake, Northwood vs Kennedy. Who do you have winning the battle of the P’ville’s? Let’s go with the home team.
It doesn’t get any easier for Rockville when they play another green-and-gold team this week. A week fresh from playing Seneca Valley, the Rams host the Damascus Hornets at Joe Good Stadium... Having been in the playoffs two years in a row doesn’t keep Sherwood from having Springbrook as Homecoming dinner... Think that’s crazy? Check out the other homecoming games of Week 7: Magruder (3-7 in 2010) hosting Clarksburg (5-5 in 2010), Northwood (4-6 in 2010) hosting Watkins Mill (5-5 in 2010), Blair (4-6 in 2010) hosting Whitman (7-4 in 2010), Einstein (4-6 in 2010) hosting Paint Branch (6-4 in 2010). Churchill picks Walter Johnson (not that crazy, but WJ did finish 6-4 compared to Churchill's 5-5 in 2010), Kennedy really had no choice when they picked Poolesville, but Northwest (1-9 in 2010) has the head coach's alma mater in Gaithersburg (11-2 in 2010) in The Black Hole. #thatsalotofballs
The playoff crunch gets closer and we’ve got some crucial playoff-caliber games come to us for Week 8. Sherwood vs Paint Branch, Quince Orchard vs Clarksburg, Whitman vs Damascus, Churchill vs Springbrook, and Seneca Valley vs Gaithersburg will prove to shake up playoff seedings and rankings in the county and the state. Note the win-lose ratios of top teams to see how they fair in past years. If either Sherwood and QO have more than one defeat right now, they will need to win the rest of the regular season plus a couple more in the playoffs to keep a decline in wins to show... The rest of the MoCo schedule pits some evenly matched teams with Rockville vs B-CC, Blair vs Blake, Northwest vs Einstein, WM vs Wootton, Northwood vs John Carroll, Kennedy vs WJ, and Poolesville vs Wheaton. If the Knights have taken care of business in the first seven weeks of the season, look for them to possible make a run for the playoffs.
We’re got pairings after pairings of border rivalry games for week 9. Headlining this week are Damascus and Seneca Valley. These two teams combine for nineteen state titles and the battle of green & gold has continued its aura of classic games they had in the 1980’s and 90’s; expect this game to be a thing of beauty… Gaithersburg takes the 4.5 mile drive down Route 124 to face Quince Orchard in a battle of Mid Mo’ County teams. The Cougars are the team of now and while the Trojans have struggled to get past the first round of the playoffs in recent years, their magical 11-win season in 2010 was an indication that Coach Kephart still got it… Churchill battles rival Wootton in a game much deserving of a rivalry cup to play for. The same can be said with RM vs Rockville and even WJ vs Whitman. Try game-hopping toward Silver Spring! check out Blair vs Paint Branch, Springbrook vs Blake, and Wheaton vs Kennedy.
The regular season comes to a close with some key games that may mean a berth in the second season. Springbrook, a consistent six-or-more win team, hosts Clarksburg. The Coyotes are looking to make a final impression in the team's first season in the 4A division. If the Blue Devils aren't a six-win team by now, their playoff hopes may be riding on this game... The Whitman Vikings plays the only Homecoming game in the county this week and they get bold by scheduling Paint Branch. Both teams being consistent playoff-caliber teams in the past couple years would certainly make this a treat for fans at Marco Stadium... Seneca Valley goes head-to-head with proximity rival Watkins Mill... Northwest plays Richard Montgomery to end Week 10 for about the 5th time in fourteen years... Walter Johnson plays their second Bethesda city game in a row hosting B-CC while Kennedy stays in Silver Spring with a game at nearby Blair.
